A Phantom Birthday Quickie
September 14th 2008 02:37
So, part of my early birthday present was to go out and buy some cheap movies. One was XXX (the Vin Diesel movie), we bought The Grudge, Resovoir Dogs, and Phantom of the Opera.
I watched Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera last night. When I finished, I started it over, and was up until 2 in the morning re-watching Phantom.
I'm going to go ahead and skip the recap. A: the story is old. B: if you haven't seen it until now (like me) you're a putz. I know, musicals are a matter of taste. Not everybody likes musical. Blah blah blah. If you can get a chance to see the stage musical when it comes through, I'm sure it'll be way cooler. There's something about seeing music live that makes it really sizzle, but where I live my best bet is if the high school does a performance.
I thought it was sincerely awesome, and I think another part of my birthday present will be acquiring the soundtrack. Worst luck that the female lead is a soprano, being an alto I can't hit all of those notes. Ah, well, some things just can't be helped.
EDIT: Forgot to mention my favorite little in-joke of the movie. During the Masquerade scene, Andre (played by Simon Callow) is wearing a bird mask. Simon Callow was in the movie Amadeus (a great movie you should also see, if you haven't for some reason). In that movie, his character played Papageno in 'The Magic Flute' portion near the end- where he was dressed as a giant bird.
Maybe I'm the only one who found that funny.
