Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House (LINK)

August 21st 2008 04:51
I've been slowly trying to make my way through the Masters of Horror series, and I had this one recommended to me by a friend of mine. I decided to wait to watch it until after I'd read the Lovecraft story by the same name, in order to have a good comparison.

This short (52 minute) movie is about Walter Gilman, a college student played by Ezra Godden, who moves into a room in an inexpensive and old creepy house. His room has an odd corner in it, being so close to the attic, and he's working on a string theory about a way angles can lead from one 'membrane' to another. Chelah Horsdal plays his next-door-neighbor Frances, who also has an infant named Danny.

When Walter moves in to the rat-infested dump, he begins to have strange dreams and see an eldritch purple light. That combined with his work with non-euclidean math have led him to believe that his dreams are something like reality, and that the child of his neighbor is in grave danger.

It's short but good, and it has the slow and dreamy quality that I associate with good Lovecraft. It takes the story and updates it without it feeling like it treads all over the roots of the short story, and the score combined with decent editing make for a pretty creepy feel. The setting itself was good, with the room having a bizarre conjunction of angles in one corner.

It feels a little hokey in places, I must admit, but it's generally pretty good and the few rough spots are easy to glaze over. There were a few genuinely creepy moments, a few gross moments, and a few moments of gore that were cringe-worthy. There wasn't much in the visual effects department- not that there really needed to be- and the acting was adequate if no-more-than. I'd definitely put this on your list if you're a fan of Lovecraft or like that kind of slow and creeping horror.

That wasn't too bad that episode. But there are much better ones. Have you seen Dario Argento's Jenifer episode? Or Takashi Miike's Imprint episode?

Man, I'm terrified of watching Imprint. I like to think of myself as jaded, but realistic gore makes me very very squirmy. It's why I haven't seen Audition yet.

And I think started Jenifer, but I had something come up... or something, and I'm going to have to go back to it.

I'm working my way through them all, so eventually I'll get there. So far I have to admit that they all have had a real 'hokey' feel to them in places, but they kind of remind me of that old show 'tales from the campfire' that they used to play on Nickelodeon when I was a kid, or the old Fear Street novels I used to read. So I gotta admit that I like these at least partly for the dose of nostalgia I get off them- even the one I've seen that everyone else felt was a real stinker (Fair Haired Child, I think- could be wrong).

Ooh, cool. I think I'll check out the ones you've recommended next, since I haven't got any better ideas. Definitely had a bad need for a horror fix lately.
