Sleuth, the Remake (LINK)
April 16th 2008 07:06
Normally remakes bring out a snarl from me. I'm grumpy about remakes. I've seen about 30 bazillion remakes. I could ramble about how there's no creativity left in Hollywood anymore, but that's an old song and I think everyone knows the lyrics.
But I saw Sleuth on the shelf (featuring Jude Law and Sir Michael Caine) and it was calling my name. I scanned the back just enough to decide that it was basically the same plot.
Young Milo Tindle (Jude Law) is called to the house of his lover's husband Andrew Wyke (Michael Caine) where the game is afoot. Honestly, much more plot than that and I run the risk of spoilers. If you watched the first one you know the plot, for the most part. If you haven't, you should watch the first one.
As a note, I have seen the original, and one of the reasons that I picked this version up is that Michael Caine was featured in it. The original featured Michael Caine as Milo Tindle and Sir Laurence Olivier as Andrew Wyke. It's a fabulous movie, and I've never seen it's like. There's a difference between being clever, and being genuinely good. Sleuth, 1972, is a good movie.
The 2007 version has some very good back and forth, and the two men have got a lot of charisma, they're great going back and forth. It's the little snipes back and forth, the subtle animosity between the two gentleman. There's a new and interesting take on it, with all this technology in Wyke's house. Burglary alarms and cameras, a beautiful house with set design, and some very interesting visuals set up.
The acting is, naturally, stellar. Michael Caine does a marvelous job (what a shock) and Jude Law plays his part to perfection.
The ending gets very creepy and, to avoid giving too much away, there's a bit of a homo erotic vibe that gets VERY strong towards the end. The physical closeness of their bodies, the way they speak to each other, it definitely comes off as decidedly.... I dunno, creepy and sexy in a sexy-creepy way.
It's a movie that's worth watching. If you've seen the original, you should know that the ending is a tad different from the original, but they took it in a different direction towards the end.
The music, by the way, is marvelous, and just underlines the movie perfectly. There's some beautiful shots in this movie. It's hard to make a movie about two people look beautiful and visually interesting, and this movie succeeds, in my humble opinion. It's a movie worth watching, and if you haven't seen the original, that's ALSO a movie worth watching.
