Stephen King Rocks My Socks
April 10th 2008 00:03
And although that is the norm and not really news, I have a news item to back me up.
You must read this. I don't know how long the article will be up, hopefully a while.
Although I normally post about movies and he's talking about video games, I think this has validity for a lot of forms of media. In fact, I think this is why Stephen King was moved to write. Video games are an easy target- relatively new to the world, and everyone is concerned about the amount of violence that's in them, apparently. But once you set a precedent like this it is dangerous and slippery ground.
And, quite frankly, this is about throwing ALL parental responsibility out of the window. I am 23 years old.. Before I turned 13 I watched very few movies my mother had not vetted first- occasionally we watched movies in school she didn't have foreknowledge of, but those were mostly harmless. Now, some of those movies others might deem objectionable, but Mom took the responsibility of that into her own hands and the only thing that's come of it is that I happen to like Rocky Horror for nostalgic reasons. Once I hit 13 I was writing amateur slasher/horror stories and Mom figured I understood my own boundaries well enough to make that decision on my own.
That is a parent's job. It's not a job that belongs to the government- any level of government. A ratings system so that it's easier to make informed decisions? I can agree to that. Mandatory censorship is a step too far.
Okay, sorry. I'll leave the soap box at home from now on.

I read The Exorcist at 14 and it didn't make me want to go out and devil worship.
