Three Movies I'll Sell my Soul to See in the Theater

April 24th 2008 20:35
Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been ill all week. So instead of doing real work, I want to talk about the three summer movies that have me creaming my jeans- er, metaphorically speaking...

I generally don't go see movies in the theater. Having the movie on a big screen in that sound system only really enhances the experience of some movies. Death Proof? Awesome. Keeping Mum- not really necessary. So I'm normally pretty 'meh' about seeing a movie in the theater. This summer, there are three that WILL happen.

3. Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Okay, it's on everyone's TO SEE list this summer, I know. However, I have to see this in the theater. Being 23, the only Indian Jones that I would have been able to see and remember in the theater was the Last Crusade, and I didn't get to (single mom was in school, you see). So I have to see at least one Indiana Jones in the theater (hopefully they'll get smart and re-run the older Jones movies through the theater, wouldn't that be all kinds of awesome?) even if it makes me mildly nervous. There's not much that can be judged from the trailer- it could be awesome, or it could be a terrible disappointment. I'm obviously banking on awesome because it's a freaking Indiana Jones movie and rabid fans with bullwhips, hats that look dorky on anyone but Harrison Ford, and daggers will chase Speilberg if it isn't. I'm convinced that the only reason Lucas still lives is because there are no operational lightsabers... yet.

2. Iron Man

I haven't been so excited about a comic book movie since.... well, ever. The trailer is sheer awesomeness, and the brilliance of snatching the Black Sabbath song is beautiful. I also think that Robert Downey Jr. was a good choice- I'm hoping he proves me right in the movie. It's probably one of the few movies where the trailer has completely and 100% sold me on the movie. The first time that I saw the trailer I knew I wanted to see this movie.

3. The Dark Knight

You know, I was a huge fan of the first movie in spite of some of it's flaws, and I definitely think it's the best and most worthy Batman movie since the Burton original. I loved the Burton Batman, and thought Michael Keaton did a good job playing the emotionally damaged Bruce Wayne- but I think in looks alone Christian Bale wins- he actually looks like he could kick your ass, utility belt aside. One of my favorite things from Batman Begins was the nod to James Bond with Morgan Freeman being the helpful gadgeteer. The fact that they laid out where and how he got his costume, what the parts were from and for, really made it- the costume has a lot more meaning if the damned thing has meaning, no?

Heath Ledger's untimely death will cast an unfortunate pall over the movie for some people, but I have to see this movie in the theater. Have to.

Okay, so that's my filler for the day, hopefully I'll get more motivated and feel less like booting, and I can make a real post later. If you feel like it, tell me what movies you're looking forward to seeing this summer.

I dunno, Bethany...

my review of Indiana Jones

my review of Ironman

Dark Knight looks better, but I wouldn't get my expectations up.

heh, I've already hit up Indiana Jones (I haven't written it up yet) but I went in expecting a huge poo sandwich. I'm going to catch Ironman sometime this week- since I had Indy spoiled for me, I want to go into Ironman 'fresh' as it were. However, I still maintain that it'd be hard to do worse than some of the comic book movies that have been released- that reminds me, I need to hunt up Fantastic Four 2 and piss myself off for a couple of hours.

I understand everyone's problem with Indy 4, but I knew that when I walked into the theater. Hell, I knew that 2 1/2 months ago when I wrote this article before Indy came out. I knew it was gonna catch a lot of hate, no matter what. And I pretty much agree with the general 'pleh' assessment. (I don't think it was the worst ever, but it certainly sucked.) But mostly I went because it was the only Indy I'll ever get to see in theaters (unless they re-release the first three... please oh please).

I maintain my optimism on Dark Knight, though. The first in the series was a very well-done re-imagining of the Batman series, and although I've had people threaten to disown me for this, I like it better than the original Batman. I think that, if given the proper budget and time (instead of just slap-dashed together like sequels tend to be) it could be a sequel worthy it's predecessor. I'm young, my optimism has yet to be destroyed by cynicism.
